Turkish Drama: Imamoglu's Detention Sets Off Nationwide Protests

- Rival of Erdogan and CHP Politician, Ekrem İmamoğlu, Detained

Here's the lowdown on the latest political row in Turkey. The Istanbul mayor and runner-up to strongman Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ekrem Imamoglu, finds himself slapped with a detention order. This ruling came from a Turkish court, as reported by the state-run news agency Anadolu.

Initially, the Istanbul prosecutor's office had pushed for this detention. Imamoglu was arrested on Wednesday alongside a slew of others, just days before his intended nomination as the largest opposition party CHP's presidential candidate.

Imamoglu finds himself entangled in two investigations – one on corruption charges and the other on allegations of terrorism. The corruption investigation concerns suspicions of membership in a criminal organization, blackmail, bribery, fraud, and bid-rigging. The terrorism investigation stems from claims of cooperation between CHP and the pro-Kurdish Dem Party in local elections. The outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) is believed to have used this cooperation to extend its influence.

Turkey: Protests Amidst Ban on Demonstrations

The detention order initially targeted the corruption investigation. A total of 106 individuals are under scrutiny in both cases. Imamoglu's advisors and many others were also ordered into detention. Imamoglu denies all accusations.

Imamoglu took to a platform to address his supporters and lambaste the investigation against him, saying, "I call upon my people. With your support, we will first thwart this coup, and then we will send away those who made us experience this."

The government is accused of trying to eliminate a political rival with its actions against Imamoglu. Despite a ban on demonstrations, his arrest has sparked large-scale protests throughout the country that have lasted for several days. CHP claimed 300,000 protesters in Istanbul alone on Friday, but this number could not be independently verified.

Erdogan Warns Against Protests

Protests were met with pepper spray in Istanbul and Ankara, while demonstrations were reported from across the country during the day. Overnight on Friday, thousands took to the streets in more than a dozen cities. According to the Turkish Ministry of the Interior, 343 people were arrested to prevent the disruption of public order. The ministry vowed to stamp out chaos and provocation.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Imamoglu's supporters against protests over the weekend, labeling them "street terror." He went on to say, "Just as we have never yielded to terrorism, we will not give in to vandalism." Regarding Imamoglu's charges and the calls for protests, he added, "It is deeply irresponsible to refer to the street in defense of theft, plunder, illegality, and fraud, instead of going to court."

It's no secret that Imamoglu's victory in Istanbul in 2019 was a bitter blow to Erdogan's AKP Party, which had ruled the city until then. Imamoglu reclaimed victory in Istanbul in 2024. As the most populous city and of significant political and economic importance, Istanbul is often seen as a symbol of overall political influence in the country. Erdogan's rise also began in Istanbul when he was elected mayor there in 1994.

CHP Stands by Imamoglu as Candidate

Despite the accusations, the CHP intends to go ahead with Imamoglu's nomination as their presidential candidate. A nationwide vote involving 1.7 million CHP members is taking place today.

Imamoglu is the sole candidate. Observers consider him a formidable challenger to Erdogan, but the investigations could potentially derail his official candidacy. The next regular presidential election is scheduled for 2028.
