In a move to enhance safety, Berlin has implemented a new regulation that bans knives and other weapons on all S-Bahn, U-Bahn, buses, and trams, effective from July 17th. This regulation includes blank-firing, irritant, and signal weapons, aiming to create a safer environment for the city's commuters.

Meanwhile, Brandenburg, a German federal state, has seen a significant change in its firearm landscape. By the end of 2024, there were 1,400 fewer registered firearms compared to the end of 2022. However, the number of people in possession of firearms in Brandenburg increased by 1,417 from the end of 2020.

The increase in small arms permits in Brandenburg, as well as Germany as a whole, can often be attributed to factors such as perceived security concerns, changes in gun laws or enforcement policies, and increased civilian interest in firearms for personal protection or sport shooting. However, it's essential to note that without direct evidence, these factors remain contextual inferences rather than confirmed explanations.

Germany has strict firearm laws. To obtain a small arms permit (Waffenbesitzkarte), applicants must demonstrate a legitimate need, pass background checks, and show proficiency and safe storage of weapons. Carrying firearms in public (Waffenschein) is more tightly controlled and generally allowed only under exceptional circumstances, requiring additional permits and justifications. Brandenburg, as a German federal state, follows these federal regulations with local enforcement nuances.

As of the end of June 2022, there were 29,936 people in Brandenburg who were in possession of one or more firearms or firearm parts. A total of 137,802 firearms capable of firing projectiles are in private ownership in Brandenburg. It's important to note that shooting outside one's own premises or outside shooting ranges is not allowed, even on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Carrying a weapon with a Small Arms Permit during demonstrations and public events is also prohibited. Individuals aged 18 and above can carry blank-firing pistols outside their own homes and premises with a Small Arms Permit. However, shooting on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day is not allowed, even with a permit.

Since the beginning of the increase in small arms permits in Brandenburg, the number has been on a steady rise for several years. For the most accurate and current data on the increase in small arms permits and carrying regulations in Brandenburg, consulting official Brandenburg Interior Ministry sources or recent governmental reports is recommended.

In Brandenburg, the interest in sports shooting has evidently risen, considering the increasing number of small arms permits over several years. Despite the decrease in registered firearms, the rise in permit holders suggests that more individuals are participating in sport shooting activities.
