Rise and Shine, Los Angeles. It's as if we are all Jimmy Kimmel today.

In the past, San Francisco served as a symbol of opposition for MAGA ideologies, but that narrative has shifted. The new political figure akin to Trump is now zeroing in on Los Angeles with resolute focus.

Rise and Shine, Los Angeles. It's as if we are all Jimmy Kimmel today.

In a dramatic turn of events, late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel finds himself at the centre of a free speech controversy. The suspension of his popular show, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", has sparked protests in Hollywood, with protesters calling for an end to censorship.

The controversy began when Kimmel made controversial remarks about the alleged killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The sanctioning of Kimmel's show was initiated by executives at ABC's parent company, The Walt Disney Company, following pressure and potential regulatory action threatened by Brendan Carr, chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

President Trump, who chose Los Angeles as the first stop for his National Guard tour, added fuel to the fire by encouraging NBC to fire its late-night hosts, including Kimmel, due to their political comments. This situation is seen as making an example of Los Angeles, a city that is often perceived as embodying what is wrong for a certain slice of the American right.

Los Angeles, with its California dreams and anything-goes attitude, has long been a beacon for new, often difficult, ways of seeing the world. Many of its residents, including its Black mayor, Latino senator and representatives, undocumented residents, LGBTQ+ adults, comics, musicians, actors, and writers, have pushed for these new perspectives.

In the past, comics like Zero Mostel, Philip Loeb, and Lenny Bruce have often been on the front lines of free speech issues. Lenny Bruce, in particular, claimed he was less a comic and more a "surgeon with the scalpel for false values."

The University of California is also facing pressure, being forced to turn over the names of staff and students it may have a beef with. This is a growing feeling that we may not be far from a new House Un-American Activities Committee.

Amidst this turmoil, Hannah Einbinder, who shouted out a "free Palestine" at the Emmys, may face a quiet fear of hiring due to recent events. Our democracy depends on citizens, regardless of political affiliations, to stand up and fight for core values that have made the country the envy of the world.

In the face of adversity, Jimmy Kimmel has declared, "I am Jimmy Kimmel, and I will not be silent." Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and other late-night hosts have spoken out in support of Kimmel, with Hollywood Inc. recently dropping "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" indefinitely over his comments about Charlie Kirk.

As the city of Los Angeles continues to be seen as a specific reality to the rest of America, the fight for free speech and the right to express political views without fear of reprisal remains a crucial issue. Protesters have packed Hollywood, demanding an end to censorship and a return to the principles of freedom of speech that have defined America for centuries.
