Riotous chaos marks return of Real Madrid to Champions League: Fervent OM supporters witness vehicle fires, confrontations with law enforcement after their match

In the heart of Madrid on September 17, 2025, a tense atmosphere engulfed the Bernabeu stadium during the Champions League match between Real Madrid and Marseille. The day had started peacefully, with Marseille fans arriving in the city in the morning, but as the match drew closer, chaos unfolded.

Two young friends from Avignon, Rafaël and Mathis, had driven all night to attend the much-anticipated match. They were subscribers for two years and had never been on an away trip before, even within France. Their excitement was palpable as they joined the noisy crowd, expressing their support for their team.

However, the crowd management was disorganised, leading to a bottleneck and clashes between fans and police. Baton and shield charges were used, and there were reports of panicked horses on duty. The interior alley of the Bernabeu was transformed into a bottleneck, causing delays and tension among the supporters.

The start of the procession was delayed by around forty minutes due to various hiccups and bizarre crowd management. The Olympic cortege, which was barely contained by the local police forces, also caused additional delays and tension.

Despite the chaotic start, Marseille supporters made significant noise during their return to the Champions League. Their chants could often be heard above the rest in the Bernabeu. Medhi Benatia, a Real Madrid player, felt as if they were at home when the Marseille goalkeepers came out, such was the intensity of their support.

Calm was eventually restored as the Marseille fans approached the turnstiles, singing their chants. The clashes between fans and police were a stark contrast to the peaceful morning when the fans had first arrived in the city. The Champions League match between Real Madrid and Marseille will undoubtedly go down in history as a day of high tension and passionate support.
