In the wake of the tragic shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Democratic and Republican lawmakers are urging for a reduction in heated rhetoric in politics. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Tennessee State Representative Bo Mitchell are among those calling for a change.

Riley Gaines, another conservative activist, has also expressed concerns about her safety following the incident. Gaines, who has faced incidents at her events and recent violence, is rethinking her security measures. She believes that lowering the temperature of the national conversation could help create a safer environment for all.

The ongoing investigation is into the shooting death of Charlie Kirk. In a statement, Representative Bo Mitchell expressed his condolences and stated that violence should not be part of political conversations. He emphasised the importance of ensuring safety for everyone engaging in democracy.

Former U.S. Representative John McGuire also spoke out after the death of Charlie Kirk, calling for prayers and implying a need for reflection amid rising political violence. He believes that such reflection is crucial for improving safety in politics for all.

Last spring, five people were arrested during one of Riley Gaines's speaking events at Portland State University. Video footage from a sister station showed protesters surrounding the building during her event. Gaines has expressed her fears about her safety at future events, especially on campuses.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, it is clear that many are seeking ways to make politics safer. Both Democratic and Republican leaders agree that reducing heated rhetoric may be one step towards achieving this goal. However, the challenge remains to find a balance between passionate discourse and respectful dialogue in the pursuit of a safer and more inclusive political environment.
