Firing Up the Impeachment Debate: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju Gives the Lowdown

In an explosive statement, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has shed light on the ongoing impeachment saga of Delhi High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma. According to Rijiju, the impeachment motion against Justice Varma is rooted in claims of corruption within the judiciary, ruling out any scope for political bickering.

The buzz about impeachment got louder when piles of scorched cash were found at Justice Varma's residence after a fire. Rijiju, speaking to news agency ANI, made it clear that the impeachment matter doesn't leave room for political posturing.

"The impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma is a matter of corruption in the judiciary. So, there's no space for any politicking or having a separate political standpoint for every party. Instead, we need a united front," Rijiju asserted.

He further emphasized that the Parliament, collectively, will need to discuss this issue and move forward. The Minister is actively building consensus among all political parties and engaging in talks with prominent leaders with the intention of reaching out to everyone.

Rijiju commented that the responses have been positively receptive, with both sides acknowledging the seriousness of the issue and the necessity of disregarding political affiliations while addressing the nation's welfare.

It's important to note that this statement follows widespread speculation that the government might present an impeachment motion against Justice Varma.

Cash Controversy: Inquiry and Reports

Earlier, the Supreme Court formed a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the allegations of "burnt cash" within a storeroom of Justice Varma's residence. The committee, headed by then-Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, submitted its report last month and forwarded it to the Prime Minister and the President of India.

On May 4, a panel of judges tasked with conducting an internal inquiry into the allegations delivered its report to the then CJI, Sanjiv Khanna. The investigation aimed to examine allegations against Justice Varma, who was a sitting judge of the High Court of Delhi at the time.

Monsoon Session: A New Beginning for Debates

Rijiju announced that the Monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled from July 21 to August 12. During this session, both Houses of Parliament will reconvene on July 21 at 11 am, following a break of over three months.

Originally, the Opposition leaders had demanded a special session of the Parliament to discuss the aftermath of the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. However, with the Monsoon session now imminent, the focus will once again shift towards the impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma.

Standing Tall Against Corruption

With the government ready to present the impeachment motion in the upcoming Monsoon Session, the road ahead isn't without challenges. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has expressed concerns about the legitimacy of the in-house inquiry, advocating for a formal criminal investigation instead.

Regardless, the impeachment motion is shaping up to be a significant event, as the nation grapples with allegations of corruption within the judiciary and the government seeks to maintain the public's trust.
