Germany Swings to the Right, Berlin Bucks the Trend

The 2021 federal election in Germany concluded, with the conservative CDU leading the pack with 28.5% of the national vote, followed closely by the far-right AfD with 20.8%. However, the nation's capital, Berlin, showcased a different political landscape, giving hope to progressives amidst a largely disheartening election day.

In Berlin's diverse political landscape, Ferat Kocak, Ines Schwerter, Pascal Meiser, and Die Linke veteran Gregor Gysi clinched direct mandates, as the Left party emerged as Berlin's most potent political force. This unexpected outcome contrasted CDU candidate Friedrich Merz's final campaign speech declaration, "The Left is over." Not in Berlin, it seemed.

Berlin's electoral map was a kaleidoscope, with Die Linke taking the lead with four direct seats, followed by the CDU and Greens with three each. The SPD and AfD claimed a single seat apiece, with the AfD securing victory in Marzahn-Hellersdorf and the SPD in Spandau. Many races were neck-and-neck, with Tempelhof-Schoeneberg's Green candidate Moritz Hamburger barely edging out his CDU opponent by a mere 61 votes.

The election's significance was mirrored in the astonishingly high voter turnout: 82.5% of eligible Berliners exercised their democratic right.

Berlin's standout victory undoubtedly belonged to Ferat Kocak in the Neukoelln district. Not only did he win handsomely with 30% of the vote, but he also made history as the first Die Linke candidate to secure a direct mandate in the West.

In broader terms, the 2021 Berlin state election suggested challenges for the CDU in urban centers, reflecting nationwide trends. Meanwhile, The Left's presence in Berlin's political sphere remains significant, despite a slight decrease in voter support compared to previous years. The Greens and SPD demonstrated increased support for environmental and social policies, making them the primary election winners.
