Right-wing politician Kari Lake plans to assign One America News Network with the responsibility of managing Voice of America's programming.
Rewritten Article
Kari Lake, ex-senior advisor to the Trump administration for the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), has teamed up with the conspiracy-pushing One America News Network (OAN) to handle news programming for Voice of America (VOA).
Lake announced this "arrangement" between OAN and USAGM on X, late in the evening on Tuesday. In a turn of events, OAN will now take charge of VOA's news production.
USAGM manages VOA, the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, and Radio Martí, which primarily targets Cuban listeners with messaging historically designed to support democracy.
Apparently, OAN offered its newsfeed and video services free of charge. Lake asserted that allowing San Diego-based OAN to transmit information, thanks to its own resources, would save taxpayers some dough.
"Being one of the handful of American family-owned media networks still standing, we're thankful for OAN's generosity," Lake posted.
Similar to Lake, OAN has been promoting unsupported theories regarding election meddling since Donald Trump's defeat in the 2020 presidential election. Likewise, during her 2022 gubernatorial bid in Arizona, Lake herself alleged electoral fraud without presenting any evidence to back her claims.
Established during World War II to counter Nazi propaganda, VOA primarily caters to audiences outside the U.S. in nearly 50 languages across multiple media platforms.
Lake revealed her delight over being entrusted by President Trump with VOA and its massive audience of 326 million in December.
Since the beginning of Trump's first term, OAN has been a staunch supporter of him, earning his admiration when other media outlets, such as the much larger Fox News, didn't meet his expectations for loyalty. In March 2019, OAN tweeted proudly that it was "one of his GREATEST supporters" in the media. However, the network faced legal actions and platform suspensions for its coverage of the 2020 election and the COVID-19 pandemic[1][2][3].
