Right-wing, left-wing, and center-wing individuals should find Conan O'Brien's statement about Jimmy Kimmel's suspension troubling.
In a surprising turn of events, the late-night television landscape has been shaken by the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel's talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Disney Plus. The show, indefinitely preempted by ABC, follows Kimmel's comments about the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, which caused a significant uproar.
Disney Plus, the show's streaming platform, has paused the airing of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in response to the controversy. This decision has sparked a wave of dissent among fellow late-night hosts, including Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and Jon Stewart.
Conan O'Brien, a man with a rich history in late-night television, having hosted NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien from 1993-2009 and later Conan on TBS from 2010-21, voiced his opposition to Disney Plus's move. He wrote on social media, "The suspension of Jimmy Kimmel and the silencing of other late-night hosts on Disney Plus is wrong."
O'Brien's statement suggests that he believes anyone with a conscience knows the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel on Disney Plus is unjustified. Moments after Nexstar's announcement, Disney Plus made its own decision to pause the show.
David Letterman, another veteran of the late-night scene, commented, "You can't go around firing someone because of fear or trying to appease an authoritarian criminal administration."
Jay Leno and Letterman have also expressed their support for Kimmel during this time. Kimmel's comments about the MAGA gang's actions following the killing were described by O'Brien as "desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them."
The FCC chairman, Brendan Carr, called Kimmel's comments "some of the sickest conduct possible." However, the late-night community appears united in their support for Kimmel, with the suspension disturbing hosts on the Right, Left, and Center, according to Conan O'Brien.
Kimmel and Disney Plus executives are expected to meet today to discuss the situation. As the industry watches closely, the future of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Disney Plus remains uncertain.
