Right-wing extremist forces carry out searches in three German regions
In a significant development, joint investigations by the Central Office for the Prosecution of Terrorism in the General Prosecutor's Office in Celle and the LKA in Lower Saxony have uncovered a suspected right-wing extremist armed group in Germany. The operations, which were carried out in Lower Saxony, Baden-Württemberg, and North Rhine-Westphalia, targeted eight suspects aged between 32 and 57.
The investigations led to searches at 12 locations in Lower Saxony, specifically in the region of Hannover and in the city and district of Hildesheim. During these operations, special forces secured several short and long firearms, ammunition, cash, and items suitable for use as explosives.
One of the suspects had a pistol and ammunition seized from them at the end of April by the LKA. The weapons secured by the special forces, according to initial findings, do not fall under the so-called War Weapons Control Act.
Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens stated that this operation underscores the greatest threat to the rule of law and democracy comes from the right. She warned that efforts to arm themselves are frequently observed within extreme right-wing groups and emphasized that security authorities and the judiciary must keep a close eye on things and exploit all possibilities to consistently disarm constitutional enemies and right-wing extremists.
The authorities are examining these findings forensically and evaluating numerous data carriers to gain further insights into the group's activities and any planned joint actions. One search each took place in the Enzkreis (Baden-Württheimer) and the Kreis Lippe (North Rhine-Westphalia). Four of the suspects are alleged to possess illegal military weapons and other fully automatic firearms.
Behrens reiterated that this operation serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need for continued efforts to combat extremism and maintain the integrity of democracy in Germany. The investigations are ongoing, and further updates are expected in due course.
