Right-Wing Crimes Surge in Germany's First Half of 2020

The first half of 2020 witnessed an upsurge in politically motivated crimes with a right-wing background in Germany. The number of Islamophobic crimes jumped from 42 to 78, while antisemitic crimes rose from 96 to 103. Refugee-hostile crimes also increased, from 51 to 69. Verena Schäffer, deputy chairwoman of the Green state parliamentary faction, voiced concern about the escalating threat of right-wing extremism.

In total, 1,301 politically motivated crimes with a right-wing background were documented in the first six months of 2020, indicating a rise compared to the same period in 2019. In North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), such crimes also increased, though no specific organization was pinpointed as responsible for the majority of incidents. Instead, official reports emphasized overall trends.

Schäffer flagged assemblies against Corona protection measures as a cause for concern. At these gatherings, right-wing extremist and antisemitic symbols were displayed. The increase in Islamophobic, antisemitic, and refugee-hostile crimes underscored the growing challenge posed by right-wing extremism to democratic society.

The surge in right-wing extremist crimes in Germany, particularly the increase in Islamophobic, antisemitic, and refugee-hostile incidents, was a worrying trend. Verena Schäffer's concerns highlighted the need for vigilance and action to combat this threat to democratic values and societal harmony.
