Right-wing AfD political party hits record popularity, current government experiences a significant decline
In a recent RTL/ntv Trend Barometer survey, the popularity of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has taken a hit. Only 29% of respondents expressed satisfaction with his work, while a significant 67% expressed dissatisfaction. This disapproval is particularly noticeable in eastern Germany, where only 20% support Merz compared to 31% in the west[1].
Despite these low approval ratings, a majority of Germans (52%) believe that the grand coalition between the CDU/CSU and SPD will last until the end of the legislative period in 2029[1]. However, 43% expect an early failure of the coalition.
The AfD has continued its upward trend, maintaining at least 20% in the latest polls. In fact, the AfD has reached 26% twice in April in these surveys[2]. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has widened its lead over the Union, currently receiving 26% of votes, while the Union has lost a point and now stands at 24%. Even SPD voters largely reject Merz, with 95% of AfD voters also doing so[3].
The Social Democrats (SPD) remain steady at 13%, while the Greens have gained one point and now stand at 14%. The FDP is at 3%, and the Left party has fallen to 11%[1]. In the competence question, the Union falls to 19%, while AfD gains slightly to 12% and SPD to 7%[4].
Interestingly, half of the citizens do not trust any party to solve Germany's problems[5]. The BSW is at 4%, and the other parties are at 6%. These figures indicate a complex and dynamic political landscape in Germany.
