A Far-Right Romania: George Simion Ascends to the Top

Right-aligned supporter of Trump secures victory in Romanian electoral process.

Get ready, Romania! The presidential election redo has got the nation buzzing once again. In the initial round, the far-right candidate George Simion bagged a substantial lead, yet fell short of an outright majority. On May 18, a runoff election will unfold to determine the country's next commander-in-chief.

With approximately 40% of the votes cast in his favor, Simion is expected to face off against Crin Antonescu, who garnered around 21%, backed by the center-right social democratic governing coalition. Bucharest's independent mayor, Nicusor Dan, who received approximately 18% of the votes, came in a close third.

As of this writing, about three-quarters of polling stations have been accounted for. "We've penned history together, and we're edging closer to a splendid result," asserted Simion in a televised speech.

Tide of Support for a Trump Ally

Remember Calin Georgescu, the shocking frontrunner in Romania's presidential election back in 2024? Much like Simion, he held openly far-right, Kremlin-supportive ideologies, and even a penchant for Donald Trump. However, Georgescu's victory was deemed invalid due to questionable campaign financing, subsequently barring him from participating in subsequent elections.

In a twist, Simion has vowed to "right past wrongs" for Georgescu should he emerge victorious in the election. He's even suggested the prospect of appointing Georgescu as prime minister—a move that would undoubtedly turn heads in the international political arena.

The Man Behind the Movement: George Simion

Born on September 21, 1986, in Focșani, Vrancea County, George Simion is a polymath who attended both the University of Bucharest and Alexandru Ioan Cuza University. He currently serves as the leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), a party he co-founded in 2019, and was elected Vice-President of the ECR Party on January 14, 2025.

As the nation watches with bated breath, only time will tell if Romania is ready to step into the far-right waters. But one thing's for certain—this election is shaping up to be one hell of a showdown.

The community policy of Romania will likely need to address the potential far-right leanings of the country's next commander-in-chief, George Simion, given his ascension in the 2024 presidential election runoff. Employment policy will also be a topic of interest, as Simion, a leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, has made promises regarding controversial political alliances and cabinet appointments, such as naming Calin Georgescu as prime minister should he win. Romanians like George Simion, with ties to far-right ideologies, continue to make waves in politics, attracting general-news attention. However, it remains to be seen if Simion's far-right stance will be supported by the majority in the upcoming election.
