Riga Airport's communication skills earn recognition with two gold awards at the IPRA Golden World Awards
RIX Riga Airport, the future travel hub of Northern Europe, has been recognised for its communication strategies at the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) Golden World Awards 2025. The airport's 50th anniversary celebration and rebranding campaign earned two gold awards, marking a significant achievement in the global public relations industry.
For the 50th anniversary, Riga Airport chose a creative approach that celebrated achievements, experiences, and the people behind them. The rebranding campaign was planned with clear planning and transparency to avoid negative reactions and gain public trust. Aviation, according to Signe Reinholde-Āboliņa, Chairwoman of Komunikācijas aģentūra, is not typically a visible stage for creative campaigns, but RIX Airport proved that even a highly complex environment can be communicated with emotion, clarity, and a smart plan.
Industry professionals were engaged early through a dedicated preview event. The airport's year-long campaign included youth-focused activities and innovation showcases. Employees were involved first in the rebranding process, turning them into active brand ambassadors. A video exhibition titled "Riga Airport: A Personal View" by airport staff was also a part of the campaign.
The strategic success of the airport's rebranding campaign and the creative execution of its 50th anniversary celebration were developed in cooperation with Latvia's largest public relations agency "Komunikācijas aģentūra". Laila Odiņa, Chairwoman of the Board of RIX Riga Airport, emphasized that an airport's reputation is vital and that even a technical sector like aviation can communicate with emotion, vision, and purpose. Signe Reinholde-Āboliņa notes that winning the award is an honor and proof of world-class strategic communication in Latvia.
In addition to traditional communication channels, the airport's strategies likely included leveraging modern communication channels effectively, engaging multiple stakeholders including travelers, local community, and partners, and emphasising innovation and responsiveness to current trends. Given RIX Riga Airport’s operating environment in a tech-forward region, their campaigns may also have integrated the use of AI and digital tools to personalise messaging or improve customer engagement, as well as educational and community-oriented content promoting responsible and meaningful use of emerging technologies.
The "RIX Silent Disco birthday party" was held in the center of Riga for the airport's 50th anniversary. The IPRA Golden World Awards ceremony will take place in October 2025 in Ghana.
