Hell of a day at Oulton Park, innit? Bloody hell, two motorbike racers—Owen Jenner and Shane Richardson—met their end in an 11-bike crash during the British Supersport event on Monday. Another racer, Tom Tunstall, is fighting for his life after suffering significant injuries.
This tragic pileup happened at the opening lap of the race at Oulton Park in northwest England. Jenner, a 21-year-old Englishman, and Richardson, a 29-year-old New Zealander, didn't make it past the first corner. The race was soon called off, and the rest of the day's events got canned.
Motorsport Vision Racing, the organizers, confirmed the horrifying news, saying Jenner succumbed to a catastrophic head injury after being treated on the track and at the circuit's medical center. Richardson, on the other hand, was transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital with severe chest injuries but died before he made it. Tunstall, an experienced English rider, was taken to the same hospital with serious back and abdominal injuries.
Not everyone was as unlucky. Riders Cameron Hall, Max Morgan, Freddie Barnes, and Morgan McLaren-Wood suffered minor injuries, while three managed to escape unscathed. McLaren-Wood, another Kiwi, was among the lucky ones.
Jenner and Richardson's deaths have sent shockwaves through the racing world. Tributes have been flooding in from all corners, highlighting the risks that come with high-speed, adrenaline-pumping sports like motorbike racing. This devastating crash serves as a grim reminder of the need for consistent safety improvements in these events.
