Riders Involved in Major Crash During Tour de France Stage 17

The Tour de France took a dramatic turn in its 17th stage, with several riders, including Biniam Girmay, Louis Barré, and Hugo Page, involved in a significant crash near Valence. The incident occurred in the final kilometer of the race, with the riders traveling at close to 70 km/h in rainy conditions.

Biniam Girmay, the Intermarché-Wanty's rider, sustained superficial injuries in his crash but no fractures or serious injuries were detected. He managed to complete the stage after receiving immediate medical attention. Louis Barré and Hugo Page also suffered superficial injuries, with no fractures reported. All three riders are under close supervision for their recovery.

Tim Merlier did not fall but was delayed and forced to slow down well before the crash, ending his hopes in the sprint. Race leaders Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard were delayed but were given the same time as the stage winner since the crash happened within the final kilometer.

The crash was reportedly caused when wheels touched between two riders from the Picnic PostNL and Uno-X Mobility teams, and was exacerbated by the wet weather conditions, causing chaos in the sprint finish and dashing many sprinters' chances for victory.

In another development, Carlos Rodríguez will not start stage 18 of the Tour de France due to a fractured pelvis. The fracture occurred in a crash during the final kilometres of stage 17. Rodríguez, who was 10th in the general classification before his withdrawal, is currently under the close supervision of Ineos Grenadiers' medical team. He will return home to focus on recovery and the rehabilitation process.

The withdrawal of Rodríguez is a blow to Ineos Grenadiers as he was their best-placed rider. Meanwhile, Thymen Arensman, winner of stage 14, is in 14th for Ineos, but he is still well outside the top ten.

Jonathan Milan won stage 17 of the Tour de France, with the Tour de France continuing on Thursday with the first of two summit finishes in the high Alps.
