Riding the Magic Waves of Sword of the Sea

Get ready to carve up some cosmic dunes and catch some rad vibes, because Sword of the Sea is finally making a splash on August 19th! This magical surf-'em-up is the latest creation from Giant Squid, the legends behind the critically acclaimed games Abzu and The Pathless.

This time around, you'll be sliding down vast waves as an undead mage, restoring life to a desert realm by reviving creatures and returning lush greenery to its rightful place. And when the waves get high, you can strap on your Hoversword and take to the air for some mind-blowing radical 1080s! Check out the action in the announcement trailer below.

It sure feels like Sword of the Sea is following in the footsteps of the immersive, contemplative adventure Journey, especially since both games feature stunning deserts and develop under the creative direction of Matt Nava, now with Giant Squid. However, while Journey is centered around peaceful flow and introspection, Sword of the Sea looks to be much more action-focused.

As you cruise along the dunes, you'll bust out all kinds of stokes, flips, spins, and wall rides on your magical surfboard-sword. No Tony Hawk-style scoring systems or wackiness here, but you'll have loads of fun flipping, twisting, and grinding across the immense environments.

It's a shame there's been no combat revealed in the footage, but it's already clear that there are some menacing creatures stomping around. Here's hoping for an epic set piece where you can surf the waves of a town-sized beast! And of course, a magical surfboard isn't much without some opportunities to kickflip over whales for ultimate dominance. Time will tell on that one.

Catch Sword of the Sea on Steam and Epic on August 19th! If you want a taste of what Giant Squid is all about, why not check out their previous game, The Pathless? It's currently 75% off on Steam, and it'll give you a sweet taste of their unique brand of magic.
