Rickie Fowler Leverages Sponsor Invitation to Secure Open Championship Berth at The Memorial Tournament
Laying It All On The Line:
The Memorial Tournament was hotter than ever, offering a juicy $20m purse as the PGA Tour's seventh Signature Event of the season. But that wasn't all—a coveted spot at The Open Championship was up for grabs too, part of its Qualifying Series[1].
The sought-after spot went to the highest-placed player who wasn't already exempt at Muirfield Village, and the race to make it to Royal Portrush's Major turned into a nail-biter between Rickie Fowler and Brandt Snedeker[1]. The result? They both finished with a tournament score of one under, ending in a tie for seventh place.
In the end, Fowler emerged victorious, mostly due to his ranking of 124th at the tournament's commencement, compared to Snedeker's 430th[1][2]. Despite the narrow margin, Fowler couldn't hide his excitement, having been invited as a sponsor exemption to begin with[1]. On the other hand, Snedeker felt he gave it his all, just missing his first Major appearance since 2021[1]. With a superb 7 under final round of 65, Snedeker can't help but feel disappointed, while Fowler strolled away with plans for his 14th tournament appearance[1].
Snedeker's dreams aren't dashed yet, though. Another opportunity awaits him next week at the RBC Canadian Open, where three qualifying spots are in play[1].
As Fowler and Snedeker catch their breath, their sights are set on another Major—the US Open. Fowler's headed to Ohio for Final Qualifying on Monday as part of Golf's Longest Day, while Snedeker will vie for a spot at Springfield Country Club[1].
