Richard Dunwoody’s £4M Thames Valley mansion remains unsold after a year

A £4 million mansion in Bradfield, near Reading, has been on the market since May 2023. The sprawling real estate, Hewins Wood House, belongs to retired jockey Richard Dunwoody, once known as the 'king of the weighing room'. The property sits on 39 acres in an area of outstanding natural beauty within the Thames Valley.

Dunwoody, who won the Grand National twice and was champion jumps jockey for three years in a row, retired from racing long ago. Now, he focuses on photography, even collaborating with Channel 4’s Supervet Noel Fitzpatrick. He no longer misses the roar of the crowds or the thrill of riding—today, he prefers capturing horses through his lens.

The nine-bedroom main house spans 6,988 sq ft, complete with a swimming pool, stone terrace for outdoor dining, and sweeping views over paddocks and woodland. Bridle paths stretch across the estate, offering endless routes for riding. Alongside the main property, there’s an annexe, a cottage, and planning permission for four additional homes.

Located just four miles from the nearest mainline station, the estate provides easy access to Paddington. The current owner, whose identity remains private, has yet to sell the property despite its prime location and luxurious features.

Hewins Wood House remains available after over a year on the market. The estate combines historic charm with modern potential, including approved plans for new dwellings. Its rural setting and grand canyon-like scale make it a rare offering in the Thames Valley.
