"Richard Carapaz won't attend Vuelta a Espana due to prolonged recuperation from illness that forced him to skip Tour de France"
Road to Recovery: Richard Carapaz Sets Sights on Il Lombardia and World Championships in Rwanda
After a challenging period of illness, Ecuadorian cyclist Richard Carapaz has announced his focus for the remainder of the 2025 season. The former Olympic road race champion and Giro d'Italia winner will be aiming for success in the Italian classic, Il Lombardia, and the World Championships in Rwanda, scheduled for September 28, 2025.
Carapaz has been dealing with a gastrointestinal infection that forced him out of the Tour de France and disrupted his training. His recovery has been a slow process, involving "stop-start" training where he could only train for two or three days at a time. However, as of August 2025, Carapaz reports being "almost fully recovered" and has returned to Ecuador for altitude training to regain form, motivation, and focus for his upcoming goals.
Throughout his career, Carapaz has proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with. He has won gold at the Tokyo Olympics, triumphed at the Giro d'Italia, and secured multiple podium finishes across the grand tours. Notably, he has stage wins in all three Grand Tours, including three victories at the Vuelta a España, where he has historically performed well.
With the World Championships road race in Rwanda featuring over 6,000 meters of altitude in 267.5km, Carapaz believes certain factors play in his favor for the event. The race will take place at an elevation of 1,300 meters above sea level, similar to the capital city of Kigali where the World Championships will take place.
Carapaz will be missing the Vuelta a España this year due to his "stop-start recovery" from his illness. The riders who will race for EF Education-EasyPost at the Vuelta a España have not yet been announced. The start list for the 80th edition of the Vuelta a Espana can be kept up with.
As Carapaz prepares for Il Lombardia and the World Championships, he is determined to make the most of this strategic shift in his season following illness-related setbacks earlier in the year. With his sights set on these prestigious races, Carapaz aims to prove once again that he is one of the favourites for the rainbow bands at the World Championships.
