The much-anticipated film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, Wicked Part One, has finally arrived in theatres this week. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film promises a captivating journey into the origins of the Wicked Witch of the West and her complex relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch.

The film opens after the events of the original Wizard of Oz, with the Wicked Witch being dead and all of Oz celebrating. Galinda, a popular, pink-clad princess, and Elphaba, an outcast due to her green skin and stoic demeanor, attend Shiz University together. Their dynamic becomes more complex as they are forced to room together, leading to a riveting exploration of their friendship and rivalry.

Michelle Yeoh plays Madame Morrible, who takes Elphaba under her wing at Shiz University. Jeff Goldblum brings his unique charm to the role of the Wizard of Oz. Ariana Grande delivers a magnetic performance as Galinda, while Cynthia Erivo captivates as Elphaba. Their performances are praised for their depth and nuance.

The film includes various plotlines, some of which are criticized for being overstuffed and superfluous. However, the storylines about Fiyero, Nessarose, and Bok, and the animals of Oz being systematically eliminated, add a darker edge to the film.

The adaptation of the first half of the musical is very nearly the same as the original. Every song in 'Wicked Part One' is better than the last, culminating in the showstopping 'Defying Gravity'. The musical numbers are staged on massive practical sets with extras, adding to the film's grandeur.

The thematic strands and historical subtexts present in the musical are present but not particularly enlightening or noteworthy. However, the film's direction by Jon M. Chu is praised for its scope and intimacy.

Wicked Part One is expected to be beloved most by kids, with adults also enjoying it due to its entertainment value. The film sets up for a potential sequel in 2025, leaving audiences eager for more of this magical world. Overall, Wicked Part One is a cinematic experience that is not to be missed.
