Rhythmic gymnasts from Spain are gunning for the top prize at the Rio de Janeiro World Championships.
The stage is set for an exciting World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 20 to 24, 2025. This marks the first time the competition will be held in a South American country in its 41-year history.
A total of 320 gymnasts from 76 different countries will participate, including at least 109 individual competitors. Among them are the Spanish favourites María Pérez and Elena Gómez, who are tipped to reach the podium.
Spain is not the only nation with high hopes. Brazilian gymnast Barbara Domingo is a contender for a medal at the World Championships. The Ukrainian Taisiya Onofrichuk, who won gold in the individual all-around at the Tallin European Championships with a total score of 117.800, is also expected to make a strong showing.
Germany's Darja Varfolomeev and Italy's Sofia Raffaeli are among the individual competitors expected to compete in the World Championships. Varfolomeev took bronze in the individual all-around at the Tallin European Championships with a total score of 115.150, while Raffaeli finished 4th with a score of 114.950.
Stiliana Nikolova of Bulgaria took silver in the individual all-around at the Tallin European Championships with a total score of 116.700. Israel won silver in the group finals at the same event with a score of 49.500, and Hungary took bronze with a total score of 48.150.
Notably, Spain won gold in the group finals at the Tallin European Championships, finishing first in both exercises (five ribbons and three balls with two hoops) with a total score of 53.800.
The gymnasts will perform routines that combine athletic power with choreographic talent at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Park, the venue for the World Championships. The new scoring system will be used in the competition, guiding the gymnasts on the road to Los Angeles 2028.
The schedule for the Spanish gymnasts' appearances is as follows: Wednesday, August 20, individual (ball and hoop) at 00:35h, Thursday, August 21, individual (clubs and ribbon) at 21:10, and Saturday, August 23, groups (five ribbons and mixed exercise) at 22h. The individual finals will begin on Sunday, August 24, at 16:00, with the group finals taking place on the same day at 22h.
Lucía González, another individual competitor from Spain, will make her World Championships debut at the 2025 event. Alba Bautista, who finished in 8th place in the All-Around at the 2023 World Championships, is also set to compete.
