Drones with Thermal Imaging Cameras for Fawn Rescue - Rhineland-Pfalz Boosts Drone Use to Protect Fawns and Other Wildlife
In a bid to protect young fawns and other animals, the use of drones equipped with thermal cameras is being bolstered in Rhineland-Pfalz. This innovative approach aims to safeguard these creatures, particularly in the spring when they seek shelter in tall grass and are vulnerable to mowing machines.
The initiative, which has been permanently possible since late last year, involves the use of drones with thermal cameras on agricultural land. These drones can detect the heat signatures of fawns, rabbits, and nesting birds, allowing farmers and conservationists to avoid them during mowing and other activities. This year alone, 30 funding applications totaling over 118,500 euros for purchasing these drones have been approved. The funds for these applications come from the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
The increased use of thermal camera-equipped drones in Rhineland-Pfalz is expected to significantly reduce the number of fawns and other animals injured or killed by mowing machines. This innovative approach highlights the region's commitment to animal welfare and sustainable farming practices.
