Düsseldorf, a city renowned for its successful organisation of major sporting events, has been in the running to host the 2032 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. The city, along with other German cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich, was part of a multi-city bid led by North Rhine-Westphalia.

The bid, which involved hosting the Games across 13 cities including Düsseldorf, Dortmund, and Cologne, was based on leveraging existing venues and stadiums with some planned temporary expansions. The city of Düsseldorf, with its event professionals from D.LIVE and D.SPORTS, was tasked with coordinating the bidding process.

However, the bid did not advance to International Olympic Committee (IOC) board approval for the 2032 Summer Olympics. The bid faced challenges, particularly in finding a suitable athletics stadium for track and field events in the bid cities, despite having numerous venues available.

The bid remained in a stage of targeted dialogue with the IOC and the Future Host Commission but was not approved for further advancement. As of mid-2025, there is no update indicating a revived bid by Düsseldorf or the region for any Olympic or Paralympic hosting beyond this. Therefore, Düsseldorf’s effort to host the Games as part of the 2032 Olympics has not proceeded to the official IOC candidacy phase and appears stalled or discontinued.

Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) had previously shown support for the bid, with Keller highlighting that the Olympic and Paralympic Games would be the largest sporting event in Düsseldorf's history. The city, recognised nationally and internationally for its acquisition, planning, and execution of major sporting events, was leading the Rhine-Ruhr region's bid for the Games.

The decision to bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games was subject to factors such as possible costs, financing models, and the involvement of the population. The city would have drawn on its experiences from other large-scale international events to ensure a professional and sustainable implementation of the Games.

Despite the current stalemate, the city of Düsseldorf and its event professionals remain ready to step up should the opportunity to bid for future Olympic and Paralympic Games arise.

The city of Düsseldorf, with its event professionals from D.LIVE and D.SPORTS, had a keen interest in football, as they were tasked with coordinating the bid for the 2032 Summer Olympics, which also included hosting the Games across several cities, some of which were known for their existing football stadiums. Despite the bid's complications, the city's readiness for large-scale international events kept the dream of hosting the Olympics and Paralympics, and potentially future sports events like football, alive.
