German Government Plans to Abolish Fast-Track Citizenship for Well-Integrated Immigrants

Minister-President of Hesse, Boris Rhein (CDU), has welcomed the proposed withdrawal of the accelerated citizenship process for particularly well-integrated immigrants. In a statement made in Wiesbaden, he emphasized that the move sends a clear message that German citizenship is not bestowed hastily or through a fast-track process. Rhein stated that tying citizenship to the end of the integration process, rather than the beginning, will bring more order to migration policy.

The change follows initial tightening measures in the migration sector, initiated by the new federal government. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has introduced two draft bills, awaiting parliamentary approval. Among these proposed changes is the abolition of the fast-track option for well-integrated migrants, aiming to align the citizenship process with full integration.

Under the planned changes, the minimum waiting period for citizenship will be extended to five years, with language skills and knowledge of German history being prerequisites. This move intends to ensure that citizenship is granted only after thorough integration into German society, reducing the attractiveness of Germany as a destination for migrants.

The policy change forms part of a broader effort by the German government to tighten immigration laws, which also includes restrictions on family reunification for certain migrants. This development marks a significant shift in Germany's approach to citizenship and migration policy.
