Rhine River Swimming Emergency: German Rescuers Save Struggling Swimmer
Wiesbaden and Schierstein DLRG Rescue Boat Saves Swimmer in Rhine
In a dramatic water rescue operation, the DLRG (Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft) station at Schiersteiner harbor tip sprang into action on Sunday, rescuing a weakened swimmer from the Rhine near Walluf.
The incident began when volunteer activists of the DLRG Wiesbaden and Schierstein district association were informed about a swimmer in distress in the Rhine. Initial medical care was provided by the deployment forces of the DLRG.
The affected person was spotted by the crew of the rescue boat in the fairway and rescued from the water just in time before a freighter passed. The rescued person was later handed over to the crew of an alerted rescue vehicle and the police on land.
The fire department and DLRG emphasized the danger of swimming in the Rhine due to the strong current and significant risk from shipping. For safety, they recommend using better designated bathing areas, supervised lakes, or public baths.
The DLRG stations in Wiesbaden are staffed by volunteer deployment forces. The duty station is staffed on Saturdays from 13:00 to 18:00 and on Sundays and holidays from 10:00 to 18:00. Rescue boats can be deployed at any time from the station for emergency calls.
The DLRG Wiesbaden and Schierstein district association plays a crucial role in water safety. They provide professional rescue services, conduct swimming lessons and water safety education, staff lifeguards during swimming seasons, offer training courses, and engage the community in water safety initiatives.
In this particular incident, it was revealed that the rescued person was weakened, had cramps, and was apparently under the influence of drugs.
The press release on the water rescue incident was published by the fire department of the state capital Wiesbaden. The Integrated Control Center Wiesbaden was informed and forwarded the deployment data to the responsible control center in the neighboring Rheingau-Taunus district.
The DLRG Wiesbaden and Schierstein district association functions as a vital local organization dedicated to ensuring water safety through rescue operations, preventive education, and skilled lifeguard services. Their unwavering commitment to water safety and quick response in emergencies underscores their importance in the community.
