Rhine River swimmer successfully saved by German emergency personnel

In a recent water rescue operation, the Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft (DLRG) in Wiesbaden successfully saved a weakened swimmer from the Rhine near the Walluf locality.

The incident occurred on Sunday, when the DLRG station at the Schiersteiner harbor tip dispatched a rescue boat towards Walluf. The water rescue service in Wiesbaden, which operates exclusively with volunteer rescue forces during summer months, was quick to respond.

The rescued person was under the influence of drugs and had cramps, requiring immediate attention. Initial medical care was provided by the rescue forces on the boat before the person was handed over to the crew of a rescue vehicle and the police on land.

The DLRG's primary role and function is to ensure water safety, prevent drowning incidents, and conduct water rescue operations. They are Germany's largest voluntary organization dedicated to lifesaving in aquatic environments. Their core tasks include rescue and recovery operations, preventive safety measures, providing trained personnel and equipment for emergency response, and supporting public authorities and emergency services in flood emergencies and other water hazards.

In Wiesbaden, the DLRG focuses on local water rescue missions tailored to the region’s water features, including the Rhine River and local lakes. They also offer youth programs, training courses, and community engagement to raise awareness about water safety and preparedness.

The mission data was forwarded to the responsible control center in the Rheingau-Taunus district, and the integrated control center Wiesbaden was informed about the operation. The affected person was spotted by the rescue boat crew in the fairway just in time before a freighter passed.

The DLRG stations in Wiesbaden occupy one of the three DLRG stations on a rotating basis. Stations are occupied on weekends and holidays, with the duty station staffed from 13:00 to 18:00 on Saturdays and 10:00 to 18:00 on Sundays and holidays.

The fire department of the state capital Wiesbaden published the press release on the water rescue service, emphasizing the importance of using designated bathing areas, supervised lakes, or public baths for safety reasons. The fire department and DLRG also highlighted the danger of swimming in the Rhine due to the strong current and shipping risk.
