Rhine River rescue: Life-saving mission saving a final swimmer by a German boat

Volunteer Water Rescue Team Saves Swimmer in Rhine

Yesterday, volunteer activists of the DLRG Wiesbaden and Schierstein district association were called into action during their water rescue service. The team was informed about a weakened swimmer in the Rhine near Walluf.

The DLRG stations in Wiesbaden have volunteer deployment forces that can dispatch rescue boats at any time in case of emergencies. A rescue boat from the DLRG station at Schierstein harbor tip set off towards Walluf.

Upon reaching the location, the crew of the rescue boat spotted the affected person in the fairway and successfully rescued them from the water. The person was weakened, had cramps, and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

Shortly after the rescue, the person was handed over to the crew of an also alerted ambulance and the police on land.

The fire department and DLRG emphasize that swimming in the Rhine is particularly dangerous, especially due to the strong current and significant risk from shipping. It is recommended to use designated bathing areas, supervised lakes, or public baths for safety.

The DLRG, specifically the Wiesbaden and Schierstein district, is part of Germany’s largest voluntary water rescue organization. They focus on lifesaving and rescue missions in swimming areas, rivers, and lakes in their local areas, as well as training and education in swimming, water rescue techniques, and first aid to prevent drowning and water-related accidents. During flood emergencies and other water-related disasters, they provide technical rescue, safety supervision, and assistance to local emergency services.

The DLRG shares this volunteer and community safety focus but with a more specialized emphasis on swimming safety and drowning prevention in their jurisdiction. The Integrated Control Center Wiesbaden was informed in parallel about the water rescue operation.

For more detailed operational information about the DLRG Wiesbaden Schierstein district, please visit their official website or contact them directly. The water rescue service operates from 13:00 to 18:00 on Saturdays and from 10:00 to 18:00 on Sundays and holidays. The duty station is staffed during these hours on weekends and holidays during the summer months.

This press release was issued by the fire department of the state capital Wiesbaden on the topic of the water rescue service. Similar services, such as US Urban Search and Rescue task forces and Australian Marine Search and Rescue units, conduct water rescue alongside other technical rescue operations, focusing on flood and urban water rescue contexts, and providing extensive emergency assistance to vessels and persons in distress on the water, respectively.
