Rhine Police Warn of Deadly Currents Ahead of Pentecost Weekend

Authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia have issued a strong warning ahead of the Pentecost weekend. The Rhine Police are urging people to stay out of the river, highlighting its deadly risks. Every year, tragic drownings occur in the Rhine due to its powerful currents and hidden dangers. The prevention campaign, named RHEIN.CLEAR.DEAD., is led by the Duisburg Police in partnership with the DLRG and the Water Rescue Service. It targets swimmers and visitors with a clear message: the Rhine is not safe for swimming, even for experienced athletes.

The river’s fast-moving currents, undertows, and whirlpools can overwhelm anyone in minutes. Heavy ship traffic adds another threat, as suction from passing vessels can pull people under—even if they are only standing in shallow water. To reach as many people as possible, the campaign is spreading its warning through social media. The goal is to connect emotionally with the public and prevent further accidents during the holiday period.

The Rhine Police continue to stress that the waterfront can be enjoyed safely—without entering the water. Standing in just a few centimetres of the river can be fatal due to the force of passing ships. Authorities hope the campaign will reduce the number of drowning incidents this year.
