Rezekne's ex-mayor intends to challenge his termination from office

In a statement made to the media at the beginning of November, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM) announced significant and systematic violations by the chairman of Rezekne City Council, Mr. Bartaševičs, in the management of the local government budget.

The alleged violations include the failure to provide factual, true, comparable, understandable, and complete information regarding the financial situation of the local government and the preparation and implementation of the local government budget.

This dismissal is reminiscent of the suspension of Mayor Nils Ušakovs (Harmony), which was also contested in court. However, the political force responsible for Bartaševičs' dismissal remains unidentified.

Bartaševičs has stated that there is no justification for his dismissal and has announced plans to appeal the court against it. He did not provide specific reasons for the political force's desire to suspend him.

The Supreme Court has pointed to the power of control of the minister responsible as well as the right to suspend the City Council President. Bartaševičs did not specify the court where the appeal will be made.

The statement indicates that the chairperson of the city or municipality council is unable to fulfill his or her duties. Bartaševsičs has made a decision on how to proceed regarding his dismissal, and the court appeal is scheduled for the end of the week.

The final judgment regarding the suspension of Mayor Nils Ušakovs came four and a half years after the suspension. Bartaševičs is a person involved in a legal case, and he should file his appeal against his dismissal at the court by October 29, 2025.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Bartaševičs remains dismissive of the allegations against him, maintaining his innocence throughout the process. The outcome of the court appeal will determine his future as the chairman of Rezekne City Council.
