Revival of International Rules Series in 2026 seems uncertain, yet there's continued enthusiasm among supporters
The GAA's plans for a 2025 International Rules Series have been put on hold, with concerns around its impact on the GAA's split-season model being the primary reason. Croke Park and Páirc Uí Chaoimh were initially earmarked to host Tests in 2025, but the series ultimately did not proceed.
This decision comes six years after Ireland's last victory in the Cormac McAnallen Cup, under Joe Kernan's management, with a Bernard Brogan-captained side. The series was last played in 2017, with Australia emerging victorious.
The AFL Grand Final will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on September 27th, 2025, but there are currently no plans for an official GAA delegation to be in attendance. However, the AFL chief has stated that they are looking at the calendars of both organizations to find a potential window for the game.
GPA chief executive Tom Parsons has previously signaled his support for the International Rules Series returning, and this topic is likely to be discussed in the GAA's pre-budget submission media briefing. Jarlath Burns, GAA president, visited Australia last September to speak with AFL chiefs about the potential revival of the series.
A suggestion has been made for a dual series involving both men and women's teams. The growth of the AFL's women's league - the AFLW - has seen many Irish players join clubs in Australia, with up to 40 involved this season. The only previous women's International Rules Series was in 2006, won by Ireland.
The AFL and GAA plan to jointly promote the hybrid sport internationally, engage in regular exhibition matches, and develop youth programs to prepare for the 2027 revival of the International Rules Series. The GAA season structure debate continues to impact the association's calendar decisions, with any competitions shoehorned in around October or November having significant implications on the club season.
Jarlath Burns acknowledged during the summer that a 2025 series would compromise the principle of giving players a rest period, and that deeper thinking is needed before a decision is made. AFL chief Dillon expressed hope in March that an arrangement for the series could be reached in the future.
The International Rules Series, featuring Ireland and Australia, is not currently scheduled for revival in 2026. However, with both parties expressing interest and plans for joint promotions and youth development programs, the future of this unique sporting event looks promising.
