Revised Agenda for the August 7 FCC Open Meeting Announced

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced an updated agenda for its Aug. 7 Open Meeting, which will be streamed live at www.fcc.gov/live and available on the FCC's YouTube channel.

The meeting will focus on several key initiatives aimed at modernising the FCC's regulations and promoting innovation in various sectors.

One of the main agendas is the consideration of a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) that proposes to reduce the reporting burdens on communication service providers during disasters through the modernization of the Disaster Information Reporting System (DIRS). This NPRM, under PS Docket No. 21-346, is part of the FCC's ongoing efforts to lighten the regulatory burden and update rules in line with current technology and market conditions.

Another significant item on the agenda is a vote on deleting 98 rules deemed obsolete under the FCC's "Delete, Delete, Delete" proceeding. This proceeding, initiated to identify and eliminate outdated, obsolete, unnecessary, or unlawfully anticompetitive regulations, aims to streamline, simplify, and deregulate the FCC’s rulebook by removing legacy regulations that impede efficiency and do not reflect current realities in broadcast and communications markets.

The FCC will also consider a NPRM and Third Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would propose to end rate regulation and tariffing obligations for legacy circuit-based business data services provided by incumbent local exchange carriers. This action, under WC Docket No. 21-17 and Regulation of Business Data Services for Rate-of-Return Local Exchange Carriers WC Docket No. 17-144, is intended to foster competition and promote investment in next-generation networks.

In addition, the FCC will consider a NPRM that would examine the national alert and warning systems from the ground up and explore ways to make them more effective, efficient, and better able to serve the public's needs. This initiative, under PS Docket No. 25-224, is a crucial step towards enhancing public safety and emergency preparedness.

The meeting will also see the consideration of a NPRM that would examine the Commission's environmental rules to ensure they comply with the amended National Environmental Policy Act and accelerate the federal permitting process. This action, under WT Docket No. 25-217, is aimed at reducing regulatory barriers and expediting the deployment of critical infrastructure.

The FCC will also consider a Second Report and Order that advances opportunities for innovation in the space economy by expediting the application processes for space stations and earth stations. This action, under IB Docket No. 22-411 and Space Innovation IB Docket No. 22-271, is a significant step towards promoting space exploration and fostering economic growth in the space sector.

Lastly, the FCC will consider a Report and Order that would modernize the Commission's submarine cable rules to unleash high-speed infrastructure deployment while strengthening national security. This action, under OI Docket No. 24-523, is crucial for maintaining the United States' competitive edge in the global digital economy.

In all, the Aug. 7 Open Meeting agenda includes action on eight items, each designed to modernise the FCC's regulations, foster innovation, and drive economic growth in various sectors. The FCC continues to demonstrate its commitment to keeping regulations current and fostering a competitive, innovative, and dynamic communications market.
