Review of the Weekend in the PSL (Professional Soccer League)
In the heart of South African football, the Cape derby between Cape Town City and Cape Town Spurs at the DHL Stadium in Greenpoint proved to be a thrilling encounter, with a total of 32 shots taken by both teams, making it the match this season with the most shots.
Cape Town City emerged victorious, securing a 3-1 win and climbing back into the Top 10 on the log. The victory was a testament to their resilience, as they had taken 24 shots in the match, the most by a team in a single game this season.
The game saw Tshegofatso Mabasa score his sixth goal of the season, a significant improvement over his performance in the last three seasons where he needed 43 appearances to score just 6 goals. Mabasa's goal was one of many highlights, as both teams showcased their attacking prowess.
Meanwhile, Spurs continued their struggle in the top flight, extending their losing record to seven consecutive games. Despite leading their rivals for most of the first half, they were unable to hold on to the advantage, a disappointing result for the team.
Elsewhere in the league, Moroka Swallows sit third on the log after seven games, with 13 points (W4, D2, L1, goals scored 11, goals conceded 9). TS Galaxy, on the other hand, have only scored 3 goals this season, with two of them being own goals in their favour. Sphiwe Mahlangu was the scorer of the team's first league goal this season.
The midweek schedule featured 12 of the 16 sides, excluding Royal AM, Mamelodi Sundowns, AmaZulu FC, and Orlando Pirates. The Polokwane City v Cape Town Spurs game had the most shots in a game (34), surpassing the total from the Cape derby.
As for the top scorers, Harry Kane continues to shine, leading the pack with 23 goals as of the 32nd matchday in the 2024/25 season. Kane's impressive form follows his record-breaking 36 goal tally in the 2023/24 Bundesliga season, where he played the full season (34 matches).
Finally, football fans are looking forward to the MTN 8 Cup final on 7th October, where Orlando Pirates will face Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. The final promises to be an exciting spectacle, as both teams have been in excellent form this season.
