Servin' Up the Dish on Teams G to O
Get ready to dig into the deets on the soccer scene's hottest teams from division G to O, served up daily for your reading pleasure in our four-part series. Today, we're darin' down on Golden Arrows, Magesi, Marumo Gallants, and the mighty Orlando Pirates. Buckle up!
Golden ArrowsLast season: 9th, This season: 12th
Three measly goals from top-goalscorers? That's a chilling harbinger of underachievement! Arrows kicked off the season on high notes, winning their opening duo of matches for the very first time in a top-flight season and snatching victory in their 700th league game in PSL history, only to follow it up with as many wins till year's end. Toss in some coaching changes and a spanking 5-0 exit in a Cup competition against Sundowns, and we've got ourselves a season of lowlights.
7 - That's the sad number of league wins the Arrows could muster all season, their worst since 2013/14's relegation trudge.
MagesiPosition swing from last season: N/A
From trophy winners to dangerously close to the relegation zone—welcome to Magesi's rollercoaster ride! When Owen da Gama took the helm in late December, the team was anchored at the bottom and sniffing relegation. It took a while for da Gama's vision to take root, but once it did, hot streaks followed.
6 - You'd be hard-pressed to find a longer run of home wins post-lockdown than Magesi's Half-dozen. That's some home cookin'!
Marumo GallantsPosition swing from last season: N/A
The team returned to the top-flight after buying into the Swallows mantle. A tumultuous start had fans fretful, but three months into the season, Ouaddou magic worked its charm. A 4-game winning streak later, and phew, they dodged the relegation bullet or the playoffs.
39 - You know the old saying—if it weren't for bad defense, we wouldn't have any good goalkeepers. Regrettably, Marumo caught that bug this season, leaking 39 league goals, the most of any team.
*Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner***Orlando PiratesPosition swing from last season: 0
By many measures, the Pirates had a commendable season. In their well-stocked trophy cabinet, they added the MTN8, a runner-up league finish, a Nedbank Cup runner-up, and a semifinal appearance in CAF. Regrettably, their successes weren't enough to dethrone their "points machine" rivals. Still, there's reason to feel optimistic.
2.18 - Yo ho! The Pirates averaged 2.18 points per game this season, the 2nd highest PPG ratio in PSL history by a team that failed to win the title (Chiefs, 2.21 points per game in 1998/99). Time to hoist the Jolly Roger and set sail towards the championship!
- Despite their strong showing in various competitions, Orlando Pirates' second-highest Points Per Game (PPG) ratio in PSL history didn't lead them to the championship, signifying a more competitive European-leagues form in the Premier League.
- Marumo Gallants, while displaying the charm of newcomers, fell victim to the most league goals conceded by any team in the Premier League this season, hinting at potential betting opportunities for more watchful football enthusiasts.
- As for Magesi, the team's rollercoaster ride from trophy winners to brushing the relegation zone demonstrates the unpredictability of sports predictions, making it an interesting subject for future predictions in European-leagues and Premier League football.
