Review of It: Chapter Two - Confronting the Most Challenging Climax
In 2019, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2017 hit movie 'It', titled 'It: Chapter Two', made its premiere. This film sees the return of the Losers Gang, played by an impressive ensemble cast including James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, James Ransone, Jay Ryan, and Isaiah Mustafa.
The film opens with a satisfyingly horrific scene featuring Pennywise's return, played once again by Bill Skarsgård. Skarsgård delivers a loony and deranged performance that sends shivers down the spines of viewers.
The central thesis of 'It' is that returning to their home is critical for the characters to understand their flaws, fears, and the pitfalls of their current life. The long middle portion of the film features the Losers being confronted by Pennywise in the form of their worst fears, accompanied by flashbacks for each character featuring past experiences with the monster.
Director Andrés Muschietti skillfully balances the dire stakes with the camaraderie of the reuniting Losers. Mike, played by Isaiah Mustafa, is the only one who never left Derry, instead choosing to stay and track mysterious crimes linked to Pennywise.
However, the finale of 'It: Chapter Two' lacks a considerable amount of the cleverness and wit that made the rest of the film so engaging. Despite this, the film managed to rake in a total of $473 million worldwide, a testament to the enduring appeal of Stephen King's works.
It's worth noting that 2017 saw a flurry of Stephen King adaptations. The 2017 movie 'It' had a $123 million opening weekend and a total of $700 million. Meanwhile, 'The Dark Tower' and 'Gerald's Game' were adapted for the big screen, while 'Mr. Mercedes' and 'The Mist' found homes on television and streaming platforms, respectively. Stephen King's 'The Mist' is currently airing on Spike TV.
In addition, a series called 'Castle Rock' was ordered at Hulu, based on Stephen King's works. With such a rich library of material to draw from, it's no wonder that Stephen King's works continue to captivate audiences and inspire new adaptations.
