Review of Human Rights Infractions During American Military Operation in Seoul
The South Korean government, in collaboration with the company concerned, has announced a thorough review into potential human-rights infringements during a U.S. immigration raid. The incident took place at a construction site of an electric vehicle battery factory in the U.S. state of Georgia on September 4, 2020, during the largest single-site operation since President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown.
Around 475 people, primarily South Korean nationals, were arrested at the factory. The workers arrested during the raid have made allegations of being held without being informed of their rights. The images of workers being chained and handcuffed caused shock in South Korea, leading Seoul to issue a stern rebuke following the incident.
The company suspected in connection with human rights violations related to the mass arrest is SK Innovation. Both South Korea and the U.S. are checking for any shortcomings in the measures taken during the U.S. immigration raid. Companies involved in the raid are also looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
After diplomatic negotiations, the detained South Korean workers were released and flown back to Seoul. Kang Yu-jung, the presidential spokeswoman, made a statement about the review during a press briefing. The presidential office in Seoul will be conducting a review into the circumstances surrounding the U.S. immigration raid.
The U.S. immigration raid was part of President Donald Trump's sweeping immigration crackdown. No new information about any legal actions or penalties was provided in this regard. The location or identity of the factory was not disclosed in the statement.
This review comes at a time when concerns about human rights violations during immigration raids have been on the rise. It is hoped that this review will bring clarity and ensure justice for those affected by the raid. The results of the review are expected to be announced in due course.
