The Rise of New Leaders in the Saxon Left Party: Eichhorn and Böhme Take the Reins

New leadership elected for Saxony's Left party - Revamped Saxon Left Leadership Council Announced

Get ready to welcome the fresh faces leading the Saxon Left Party! Anja Eichhorn and Marco Böhme are the new duo in charge, stepping up as chairpersons in a thrilling election at the party conference in Leipzig. They've effectively replaced their predecessors, Susanne Schaper and Stefan Hartmann.

Eichhorn, who previously served as deputy chairperson, and Böhme, a former state parliamentarian, both ran as a team. Eichhorn, an art historian from the Zwickau district, commended Schaper and Hartmann for their years of hard work. She acknowledged, "They're leaving office at a time of burgeoning momentum for the Saxon Left. Our task now is to nurture the unity and determination that's powered the party for the past months."

Böhme, a resident of Leipzig, added, "The Left in Saxony is making its presence felt again!" According to Böhme, we need a strong collective force in the country. Their victory came against Marika Tändler-Walenta, a former state parliamentarian, and Silvio Lang, the district chairman from Bautzen.

Schaper and Hartmann, after six turbulent years, decided not to seek re-election. They plan to focus on their duties as chairpersons of the state parliament fraction in the future. In retrospect, Schaper spoke of the challenges encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic, the start of the war in Ukraine, and the departure of the BSW from the Left. Despite leading through these crisis situations, they exit on a hopeful note, rallying their successors to make their success permanent.

The new leaders aim to set the course for needed structural and content-related renewal within the state association and the federal party. Under Hartmann and Schaper's leadership, the Saxon Left Party's membership soared by more than 11,000 members, reaching over 22,000. This growth allowed them to surpass the CDU, currently making the Left the party with the most members in Saxony.
