An entry-level motorcycle? Don't be fooled by the label, because Yamaha's revamped R3 ain't your average slowpoke. This bike has a supersporty attitude but offers high everyday usability. But it tops out at a mere 42 PS.
First impressions of the R3 are striking, with a design that screams maturity and ambition. It's adorned with a projector headlight nestled in the central air intake, flanked by two sleek LED position lights. Side winglets, reminiscent of those in MotoGP, and aggressively priced at 7,300 euros in Europe, give it an edge without breaking the bank.
A refreshed full fairing with benefits
The revamped full fairing serves more than just aesthetics. It provides better ground clearance for shorter riders and has a seat height of 78 cm, making it accessible for most. The seat cushion is surprisingly supportive, and the handlebars are positioned high, offering a comfortable and compact riding position.
The 321cc inline twin engine faithfully delivers its performance, though it's tamed to stay below the A2 license power limit of 48 PS. Once you're cruising, this limitation becomes virtually unnoticeable. The engine roars with surprising maturity, and the new assist-and-slipper clutch makes it a breeze to stay in the power band.
Speed demons will find the R3 satisfying, as it offers decent acceleration. However, when pushed beyond 120 km/h, it starts to feel strained.
Enjoyable rides, especially on windy roads
The R3 is at its best on winding country roads with acceptable asphalt. Here, the cleanly tuned handles like a dream, delivering top-notch riding pleasure - even seasoned riders can appreciate its cornering capabilities. It's lightweight, agile, and nimble, dancing through switchbacks like a pro. Weighing in at 169 kg and shod with narrow Dunlop Sportmax GPR-300 tires add to the overall enjoyment.
The brakes may not be show-stoppers, but they offer solid and predictable stopping power, fitting the bike's all-round nature. Even if you pull the lever late and hard, the R3 remains composed.
A dashboard inspired by racing
As a modern bike, the new LCD dashboard inspired by racing doesn't just display essential ride information, but also connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth. Through the free MyRide app, a treasure trove of data opens up: recent parking position, fuel consumption, engine RPM, throttle opening angle, acceleration rate, and an eco-driving indicator. You can even create a personal ride log with maps, average speed, weather and temperature, altitude, and more. Conveniently, a new USB port in the front fairing powers the digital communicator. Despite its robust impression, the price of 7,300 euros strikes a fair balance.
