The Washington Commanders are bolstering their defense with the signing of former draft pick Preston Smith, who spent six seasons with the Green Bay Packers. Smith, a second-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, made a significant impact during his time with the Packers, particularly in his first year where he set a career-best mark with 12 sacks.

In his six seasons with Green Bay, Smith tallied a total of 44 sacks, showcasing his ability to disrupt opposing offenses. However, his tenure with the Packers came to an end when he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers at the deadline during the 2024 season.

Smith's return to Washington is noteworthy as he was a solid contributor for the team in his initial stint, recording four interceptions, 24.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles in four years. The Commanders, who have a solid group of players, particularly in the front seven, are seeking additional pass rushers, making Smith's return a strategic move.

The Commanders recently suffered a 27-18 loss to the Packers, a game in which they barely managed to sack quarterback Jordan Love. Love was able to systematically dice up the Commanders' defense in the game, a factor that the team hopes Smith can address.

Smith's move from outside linebacker to defensive end in his final years with the Packers, due to Jeff Hafley's 4-3 defensive front, may also prove beneficial for the Commanders. Despite requesting a trade due to his discomfort with playing as a defensive end, Smith demonstrated adaptability and effectiveness in his new role.

The Washington Commanders are aiming to strengthen their defense, and the addition of Preston Smith could be a step in the right direction. As the team prepares for upcoming games, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Smith integrates into the team and contributes to the defense.
