Returning to Benfica, Jose Mourinho's coaching team has been revealed
After a hiatus of over two decades, José Mourinho is back at Benfica as the club's new coach. The Portuguese manager, who was previously active at Benfica between September and December 2000, was announced at a press conference held at the Benfica Campus in Seixal.
Mourinho's return to Benfica marks his second stint with the club. He was accompanied by his technical team, which includes João Tralhão, Pedro Machado, Ricardo Formosinho, Ricardo Rocha, Roberto Merella, Rúben Soares, António Dias, and Nuno Santos.
Mourinho's first training session back at Benfica was held in preparation for the away match against AVS in the sixth league round. This comes after Benfica's home game against Rio Ave from the opening round of the Liga, which was originally played but will be made up on Tuesday due to scheduling conflicts. The match against AVS is scheduled for Saturday at Vila das Aves.
The Setúbal-born coach's return to Benfica follows his dismissal from the Turkish team Fenerbahçe after a comeback defeat against the Azeri quadruple champions Qarabag in the first round of the Champions League group stage.
Benfica is currently fourth in the Liga with 10 points, five points behind the sole leader, FC Porto. The 'reds' announced Bruno Lage's departure after the 10th game of the 2025/26 season.
Meanwhile, AVS finds itself 17th and second-to-last in the Liga. Mourinho's mission at Benfica will be to help the team climb up the table and challenge for the title.
The presentation of Mourinho by the club's president, Rui Costa, was a significant moment for Benfica fans, who are hopeful that the legendary coach can bring success back to the club. The team has a home game against Rio Ave to make up, which will be played on Tuesday, just three days after the match against AVS.
The comeback of Mourinho to Benfica is a major development in Portuguese football, and fans are excited to see how the team will perform under his leadership. With Mourinho's vast experience and tactical acumen, Benfica is poised to make a strong push for the title in the second half of the season.
