In an exciting development for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy series, it has been confirmed that a new movie titled "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" is in production. This film, set to release in cinemas on 17 December 2027, is part of the beloved Lord of the Rings franchise and is being produced by Warner Bros. under New Line Cinema.

The movie will delve into a previously unexplored chapter, taking place before Frodo left the Shire, as depicted in the original Lord of the Rings book and movie. The plot will follow Gollum being pursued by Gandalf, Aragon, and the Dark Lord Sauron.

Sir Ian McKellen, who famously portrayed Gandalf in the Peter Jackson-directed films, has confirmed his return for this new adventure. He shared this news during a fan event, expressing his excitement about reprising the role and working alongside Frodo actor Elijah Wood.

Joining McKellen and Wood will be a host of familiar faces from the original cast. Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, and John Rhys-Davies have all been confirmed to return, with Andy Serkis reprising his iconic role as Gollum.

In a twist of events, Serkis will also be directing the film, marking his directorial debut in the Lord of the Rings franchise.

As for streaming services, HBO Max is a potential candidate, given its connection to Warner Bros. However, the rights for the film have yet to be finalised. Amazon Prime Video, the exclusive streaming home for the Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV series, is not confirmed as the streaming service for the new movie.

Meanwhile, HBO Max is expanding to additional regions, including the UK in January, which could potentially open doors for the streaming of this highly anticipated film.

Stay tuned for more updates on "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" as we delve deeper into Middle-earth's rich lore and embark on a thrilling new adventure.
