Return of an Additional 10 Inmates to Malir Prison Following Prison Break
FRESH TAKE:
Eid Celebrations Disturbed by Jailbreak Recaptures
KARACHI: After three days of Eid ul Adha, the city authorities reported that a further ten escaped prisoners have returned to the embattled Landhi Jail in Malir district.
In the wake of the chaotic jailbreak during an earthquake in late May, 213 inmates made a break for freedom from Karachi’s District Malir Jail. Initial reports had suggested a mass exodus during the evacuation, where the inmates were moved out into the open courtyard for safety during the seismic activity. However, the distressing scene quickly escalated, resulting in hundreds of prisoners seizing the opportunity to escape.
According to the current jail superintendent, Shahab Siddiqui, some returnees were detained, while others chose to come back voluntarily. This brings the total number of recaptured fugitives to 149, while 66 are still at large.
Recent events have seen violent confrontations between these escapees and security personnel, resulting in several injuries and even the death of one prisoner. The incident has also resulted in substantial damage to the facility, including the destruction of the IT room’s servers and doors.
As a response to the security breach, an extensive search operation was launched, involving multiple law enforcement agencies including police, Rangers, Frontier Corps, the Special Security Unit (SSU), and the Rapid Response Force (RRF). This operation resulted in the immediate rearrest of nearly 100 inmates.
Following the incident, provincial authorities have been prompted to act decisively. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has taken the initiative to remove the Prisons Inspector General (IG), the Prisons Deputy IG, and the previous jail superintendent from their posts. Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive investigation into the jailbreak by Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi and Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho.
The authorities are now offering leniency towards those who return voluntarily in the hopes of avoiding further loss of life and property. The search for the remaining escapees continues, with increased surveillance and enhanced coordination between law enforcement agencies. Meetings between inmates and their families have also resumed under heightened security measures.
In this tumultuous climate, new measures are being considered to improve prison security, including an ordinance that would empower the Chief Minister of Sindh to post Pakistan Special Police Unit (PSP) officers in Sindh jails, effectively replacing prison service officials[1][2]. Furthermore, a case has been registered at the Shah Latif Town Police Station, involving charges such as attempted murder and terrorism. The public is being urged to provide any information that might aid in the recapture of the remaining fugitives[1].
