Return of "A" Classic State Basketball Tournaments to Owensboro for the Following Season in Prep Sports Report
The Kentucky All "A" Classic state basketball tournaments are set to move to a new location in 2026, with the Owensboro SportsCenter stepping in as the host.
Gary Munsie, chairman of the All "A" Classic organizing committee, has announced his intention to sign a one-year contract with the Owensboro SportsCenter. This decision comes after scheduling conflicts at EKU's McBrayer Arena, which has been the home of the tournaments since their return in 2018.
The Owensboro SportsCenter emerged as the best facility willing to accommodate the five days necessary to play 30 games from January 21-25, 2026. The tournament has seen a nomadic past, having been held at EKU from 1991 to 2011, then at the Frankfort Civic Center from 2012 to 2017, and returning to EKU from 2018 to 2023.
Pikeville made overtures to host the tournaments, but it is at the other end of the state and has scheduling problems with its men and women's basketball teams. The Corbin Civic Center, which hosted the 2024 state tournaments due to EKU's arena remodeling, is also not the chosen venue for 2026.
The city that has been designated as the host for the All "A" Classic state basketball tournaments in 2026, under a contract with Gary Munsie and the Owensboro SportsCenter, is Owensboro.
Meanwhile, Lexi Held, a graduate of Cooper, has signed a training camp contract with the Phoenix Mercury, continuing her professional basketball career in the WNBA. Held, who previously played as a three-year starter for DePaul, totaled 1,578 points and 388 assists, which ranks ninth in the team record books.
In other basketball news, senior Alex Noe was the winning pitcher in the championship game, while Volmer and senior Aiden Schultz each had three RBI against Paris. Brossart won the All "A" Classic region baseball title, but this information is not related to the basketball tournaments discussed in this article.
As for the high school baseball playoffs, Brossart will visit 9th Region champion Beechwood at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the sectional round. Walton-Verona, on the other hand, won the 8th Region All "A" Classic for the eighth consecutive year. Keegan Gulley, senior catcher for Brossart, hit two home runs in the win over Augusta.
The change of venue for the All "A" Classic state basketball tournaments is expected to bring a fresh excitement to the event, and fans are eagerly awaiting the games in Owensboro in 2026.
