"I simply wanted to show Paari's life – the protagonist – spinning in a whirlwind in just 15 minutes." explains Subbaraj. "Before this pivotal sequence begins, things seem to be moving in a positive direction for Paari, with his wedding only a day away and all his previous troubles seemingly forgotten. But when the father character bursts into the wedding hall, his world is turned upside down in the next 15 minutes."
The original script initially had plans for breaks, but Subbaraj decided to condense it into one continuous take to better portray the chaos unfolding in Paari's life. "I thought, let's take the audience through this transformative moment without any cuts," he reveals.
The Battle to Execute the Magnificent One-Shot
The execution of such an ambitious vision proved no walk in the park. "It was quite the challenge!" confesses Subbaraj. "But it was an exciting journey for everyone involved, from the technical team to the actors to the junior artists. There was a lot of pre-planning, rehearsing, and coordination before we could pull off the perfect take."
Despite the hurdles, Subbaraj is proud of the team's perseverance and their collective efforts to bring this breathtaking sequence to life. "We managed to achieve the flawless shoot in four days. Three days were devoted to technical rehearsals, artist rehearsals, and even a test take, leaving the final day for what we needed – the perfect take," he explains.
The Privilege of Collaborating with Suriya
Many directors have praised Suriya for his willingness to tackle anything creative. When asked about his collaboration with Suriya, Subbaraj shares his admiration for the actor. "Suriya sir is deeply engrossed in the craft of filmmaking, with a genuine passion for his art," Subbaraj reveals. "He puts immense thought and emotion into each performance, and is always on the hunt for improvement."
The Challenges Beyond the 15-minute Single Shot
Retro brims with a myriad of sequences, each filled with unique challenges. "Create a scene, and presto – you'll face challenges!" Subbaraj jokes. From shooting action scenes to navigating the logistics of filming in the Andaman Islands, every moment of the filming process was a battle won.
From the Origin of Retro to Future Collaborations
Contrary to popular belief, Retro was not initially written with Rajinikanth in mind. Subbaraj started writing the script with a younger lead in mind, ultimately settling on Suriya. "I genuinely believe that Suriya is the ideal choice for this project," Subbaraj confides. "In future, we will collaborate again, but I can't reveal the timeline as Suriya has a busy schedule."
When asked about another script that Suriya liked, Subbaraj reveals, "Suriya sir was genuinely excited about the project, but the scale and complexity of the film would demand a significant investment of time from him. I am committed to working with Suriya, and together we will create something truly extraordinary."

Subbaraj and music director Santosh Narayanan share a deep bond, collaboration, and creativity – stretched across ten years and counting. "I first worked with Santosh on Pizza, and our artistic connection has only strengthened over time," Subbaraj confesses. "We connect on an emotional level and share a common vision for cinema and music, making our collaborations incredibly rewarding."
The Journey Through Tamil Cinema – Past, Present, and Future
From Nalayya Iyakkunar in 2009 to working with some of Tamil cinema's biggest stars today, Subbaraj reflects on his incredible career. "I'm thrilled with where I am today. My journey has been a pleasant ride, as I've only endeavored to work on scripts that excite me," Subbaraj admits. "I look forward to continuing to create unique, high-quality films with my production house, Stone Bench – nurturing new talent and pushing the boundaries of Tamil cinema even further."
