Retrieved migrants from a sewer, apprehending three suspects for alleged human trafficking
LAREDO, TEXAS - Early on May 28, Laredo Police responded to a suspicious activity call at the intersection of San Agustin Avenue and Grant Street, where individuals were observed opening a city sewer manhole. The investigation revealed an ongoing human trafficking operation utilizing this sewer system to transport undocumented immigrants.
Laredo Police Chief, Miguel Rodriquez, stated, "These local lines have been used for point-to-point transportation, and there's a myriad of dangerous possibilities below this type of sewer line, which is meant for sanitation." The police chief added that organized groups are continually seeking creative ways to continue transporting undocumented immigrants.
Local resident Jesus Bernal mentioned that he had not witnessed such cases for a long time, stating, "People will always find ways to fight, here or elsewhere, to find new ways – it's not because we want them or need them, but because it's a risk for their lives."
In the early hours of the day, Antonio Benavides (20), Melissa Sanchez (22), and a 15-year-old minor were arrested for their involvement in the trafficking operation. Additionally, two undocumented immigrants were detained by federal agents.
Rodriguez concluded, "The suspicious activity was reported, enabling officers to respond, detain people, initiate the investigation, and realize there were individuals underground in that manhole." The authorities also reported that the arrested woman faced further charges for possession of controlled substances.
