Retired St. Louis Cardinals outfield player may take on coaching role within Baltimore Orioles organization
The Baltimore Orioles have axed manager Brandon Hyde and field coordinator/catching instructor Tim Cossins following a dismal start to the 2025 season with a disappointing 15-28 record. In Hot seat, Tony Mansolino steps in as the interim manager, replacing Hyde.
To plug these vacancies, the Orioles are on the hunt for fresh blood.
In the mix is former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder and coach, John Mabry. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Orioles are discussing John Mabry's potential inclusion on their staff. If all goes as planned, Mabry, 54, will join the Baltimore team as a senior advisor on interim manager Tony Mansolino's crew, taking over the role previously held by Tim Cossins.
Mabry's coaching career stretches back over a decade, beginning as an assistant hitting coach under Mark McGwire following the Cardinals' 2011 World Series win. He eventually took the helm as hitting coach in 2012 following McGwire's departure to the Los Angeles Dodgers, a role he held until his dismissal, along with Mike Matheny, just prior to the 2018 MLB All-Star break.
Mabry's coaching philosophy emphasizes patience and confidence. His teams, during his tenure, consistently remained in the top half of the National League walk rate, although they sometimes struggled to score runs.
Mabry's potential inclusion in Baltimore's coaching staff would underscore a wealth of experience for the Orioles, especially considering that the team is brimming with budding young talent. As it stands, their coaching staff already includes a first-year hitting coach in Cody Asche, first-year bench coach in Robinson Chirinos, and second-year pitching coach in Drew French.
Interestingly, Mabry's arrival in Baltimore could make him part of a growing cluster of former Cardinals with the Orioles. Outfielders Tyler O'Neill and Dylan Carlson, relievers Andrew Kittredge and Matt Bowman, and, until recently, starting pitcher Kyle Gibson, all don the Orioles jersey.
If the negotiations bear fruit, Mabry is set to join the Orioles on May 30, 2025, in time for the series finale against the Chicago White Sox at Camden Yards[1][2][3].
