Scotch & Soda Bids Farewell to 40 German Outlets, Leaving 290 Workers Jobless
It's a bitter pill to swallow for the fashion world as retail behemoth, Scotch & Soda, prepares to close up shop in around forty of its German outlets. This unavoidable demise is set to impact a substantial 290 employees, as revealed by preliminary insolvency administrator, Holger Rhode. The admin broke the grim news to the dpa. Majority of these stores are scheduled for their final sale day come Saturday, with five holding on until late August to clear their inventory.
Rhode shared that employees were notified of the situation on Tuesday, with unemployment looming by the end of September. Due to the uninterested approach of the US-based private equity fund (overseers of the brand and merchandise) in passing on these assets to a new investor or negotiating a corresponding license agreement, the writeoff seems imminent.
On the Hunt for a Suitor
Rhode continues discussions with a renowned fashion retail chain regarding a potential acquisition of stores and staff. However, sealing the deal would also necessitate negotiations with the property owners. Half of the stores are based in Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia.
The German branch of Dutch fashion company, Scotch & Soda Retail GmbH, entered insolvency in June at Düsseldorf district court. The company's most recent reported revenue in Germany stood at 25 million euros. The parent company's struggle with insolvency ultimately led to a halt in operations.
The prospect of a fashion retail chain acquiring some of Scotch & Soda's German and Austrian stores and staff could offer a glimmer of hope to the endangered jobs. Despite these discussions, the complicated nature of reaching a final investor involves subsequent negotiations with property owners.
