Shopping Survey Reveals: Background Tunes Boost Cash Register Sounds - Retail Music Boosts Sales, According to a Poll
Background Music Boosts Sales and Customer Experience in Retail and Foodservice Industries, According to GEMA's Music Impact Study
A new study by music rights organization GEMA, conducted in Munich and surveying over 200 companies nationwide, has found that background music significantly increases sales in both the retail and foodservice industries.
The Music Impact Study, which compared one week with background music and one week without in the same establishment, concluded that background music increases sales by an average of 8% in retail and 5.4% in the foodservice industry. This equates to an annual revenue increase of approximately 8% to 12% for businesses in these industries.
Klemens Knoefler, a researcher involved in the study, sees new opportunities for targeted use of music in business environments. "Background music has a positive effect on customers' mood and can encourage longer dwell times, leading to increased sales," Knoefler said.
Sonja Schoenfeld, project manager of the Music Impact Study at GEMA, stated that previous studies had confirmed a positive influence of background music on consumer behavior, but there were no empirical data on the direct value of sales increases. "Our study provides concrete evidence of the financial benefits of background music for businesses," Schoenfeld said.
The study found that retail businesses with an annual turnover between 100,000 and 500,000 euros can potentially generate additional profits of between 8,000 and 40,000 euros per year through background music. In the foodservice industry, comparable turnover sizes could potentially yield up to 27,000 euros through background music.
The most frequently played genres in foodservice establishments are pop and chart songs, followed by rock and Schlager music. Retail businesses, on the other hand, tend to play a wider variety of music, with no single genre dominating.
Interestingly, the study also found that background music boosts employees' motivation and loyalty to the company in retail. 76% of surveyed retailers and 95% of participants in the foodservice industry agree that background music is a must.
GEMA represents the copyrights of around 100,000 members in Germany, including composers, musicians, and lyricists. Worldwide, GEMA is responsible for over two million rights holders.
If you are a business owner in the retail or foodservice industry, the Music Impact Study suggests that investing in background music could potentially lead to increased sales and a better customer experience. However, for precise current figures, I recommend consulting GEMA's official publications or their music impact research directly.
