Holiday Shopping Slows Down in Berlin and Brandenburg After a Strong Start
The retail sector in Berlin and Brandenburg is seeing a slower pace following an encouraging beginning to the Christmas shopping season. As Wolfgang Kampmeier, Deputy Managing Director of the Berlin-Brandenburg Retail Association, told the German Press Agency, "We started off on a positive note." The festive atmosphere, boosted by the arrival of winter and the commencement of the Christmas markets, led to bustling city centers. This momentum persisted even beyond the first shopping day on December 1st.
However, the situation has shifted as the weather has changed. Over the past week or so, business has notably decreased. Kampmeier commented, "The buying desire is dwindling, and we're noticing a resurgence of the reluctance to spend." This trend might also be linked to the numerous reports about budgetary austerity measures circulating during government spending discussions. Even the food retail sector feels the pinch, according to Kampmeier.
Currently, retail sales in the region are currently comparable to those of last year's Christmas season. In terms of overall percentage, retail sales are six percent lower than they were in 2019, before the pandemic.
Retailers are optimistic about the potential of this weekend's second shopping day, expecting it to be one of the busiest days of the year. According to the trade association, this day usually generates significant sales.
