Let's talk turkey: Retailers face a grim Christmas season
The season of goodwill and cheer isn't sparking much joy in the retail sector this year, with consumer sentiment taking a significant plunge. "Unfortunately, business was way off the mark compared to 2022 and didn't provide much of a boost," lamented Stefan Genth, Managing Director of the German Retail Association (HDE).
A whopping two-thirds of retailers are singing the blues, reporting disappointing sales compared to last year. This gloomy scenario is based on a survey by HDE, involving more than 350 retailers across the country. Though Christmas shopping was already lackluster in 2022, Genth anticipates a downward spiral in sales by five to six percent, post-pricing adjustments.
What's got retailers all worked up? According to Genth, it's the collective impact of economic sluggishness, ever-rising inflation, and ongoing conflicts that have instilled a sense of trepidation among shoppers. The retail sector also grappled with additional challenges, such as soaring energy costs and ballooning purchase prices.
But not all news is grim! Open Sundays in major cities resoundingly struck a chord with shoppers, while sports retail saw a substantial uptick in sales. "There's a strong inclination among people to do something for themselves," Genth pointed out, alluding to a lingering trend born of the pandemic era.
Clothing retailers, however, found the festive season tough sledding, humming a different tune. The uncertainty looming over the population dampened clothing sales, and retailers struggled to hit their usual targets.
The e-commerce sector also faced underwhelming Christmas trade, according to the German E-Commerce and Distance Selling Trade Association (bevh). Genth, however, detected a sideways movement at the peak level, characterized by sales that were 40 percent higher than they were in 2019. For many small and mid-sized e-commerce players, online sales have now become a cherished avenue of business.
Looking ahead to 2024, the retail sector is cautiously optimistic. For Genth, the stabilized labor market and the significant decrease in inflation could help resurrect consumer confidence and improve sentiment. However, retailers will continue to grapple with challenges—from the fallout of conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East to labor shortages and delivery woes.
